Initial Public Offering (IPO)

An Initial Public Offering (IPO) is the first time a company sells shares of stock to the public on a stock exchange. Many venture capital-backed startups aim to eventually hold an IPO as an exit opportunity. Through an IPO, the startup raises capital by offering shares for purchase to public market investors. The company trades on the stock market going forward. Investors in the company prior to the IPO have a chance to sell shares during the process and realize returns on their investment.
